Turner Motorsport planning on running BMW M4 GT4 in 2018July 6, 2017
Turner Motorsport is currently one of the biggest customer racing teams for BMW. It’s recently been racing a BMW M6 GT3 in the GT Daytona Class of the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship and two M235iRs in the PWC round at Lime Rock Park. However, it looks like Turner wants to pick up some BMW M4 GT4 racers as well.
“I said, ‘Give me as many as I can get!’” Team Boss Will Turner recently told Sportscar365. “There’s multiple series we want to run in and that car has been a long time coming.”
“It would be natural if we did some World Challenge with the M235iRs and the M4s, and in [IMSA] we’d do the M4 and some M6 [GT3s],” said Turner. “The interest in there. Of course I haven’t given people budget numbers yet because I don’t know what the exact run costs will be. But hopefully it will be less than the last time we ran GS, because that was getting crazy”
The BMW M4 GT4 is the latest in BMW’s customer racing cars and it’s first entry into the new racing series. Quite recently, DriveTribe’s Jethro Bovington recently raced in the 24 Hours of the Nurburgring in the new BMW M4 GT4 and it did quite well. For those of you who aren’t familiar, the GT4 racing series features cars the very closely resemble the road cars upon which they’re based. Sometimes, they even use stock engines with the same power output.
As for the BMW M4 GT4, it looks very much like a stock BMW M4 and it even uses the same engine. This allows it to be quite reliable, rather than having a bespoke engine, gearbox and suspension. “It’s more of the stable platform. When you think of the specs of the car, it’s not a McLaren that has uber horsepower and a different engine design. It’s classic BMW.” Turner told Sportscar365. “I also think it’s going to be a good car for the gentlemen drivers because of the paddle shift, which will mean less wear and tear on the gearboxes.”
Turner Motorsport has done well with BMW cars over the years. We don’t expect anything different from them in the new M4 GT4.
