Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabrio hits New YorkApril 14, 2017
While it’s nothing new, the Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabriolet is the pinnacle in luxurious, top-down grand touring. So, even though it’s been out for some time now, it’s always good to check it out and see just how luxurious and good looking it is. It sets the tone and the benchmark for the segment and will likely be the car BMW targets with its upcoming 8 Series Convertible.
Up on a podium, away from intimate access by enthusiasts, the Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabrio sat up there like a king. While I personally am not a fan of its white on ivory color scheme, one of only three exterior color options, it’s still a very handsome car. Those wheels are fantastic and really harken back to the days of classic roadsters.
I’ll also admit that I’m not a huge fan of the way the S-Class sedan looks but the Coupe and Cabrio are superb looking vehicles in my opinion so, obviously, the Maybach variant is no different. The rear deck is short and gorgeous wood trim adorns the deck where the convertible top folds in. Down the side, a shoulder line accentuates the curvature of the body and gives both a muscularity and sensuality to the car.
Inside, the cabin is classy an luxurious, with the only three materials that should be in an expensive luxury car: leather, wood and metal. No carbon fiber here and that’s a very good thing. I’m still not sold on the dual-screen setup Mercedes uses on the dash, for the COMAND screen and instrument cluster, but the rest of the cabin is top-notch.
Again, the Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabrio is nothing new but it’s always interesting to see and it gives us a good idea of what BMW will be shooting for with the 8 Series. Then, imagine what ALPINA will come up with. Get excited, the luxo-barge cabrio shootout is coming.
